How do you launch a game?

Posted by saraland

Ok my friend and I have figured out how to schedule a game and we downloaded gamut - but how do you actually launch a game at starting time?
We try clicking on create game and start game and it keeps giving us a pop up window about no bookkeeper.

Please help! We're fluxx addicts who live thousands of miles apart and can only play together several times a year. We love that we found the game online -- except we can't figure out the launch aspet!

Thanks for any input.

Bug Report: 10 cards goal doesn't win when it should (sometimes)

Posted by zarf

By the way: if this happens to you, I'd really appreciate a screenshot of the game immediately after the Event.

I realize that it's rare enough that the intersection of people who see the problem, and people who see this message, will probably be zero. But I'm asking anyhow.

Posted by zarf

No, I'm still unable to reproduce the problem. Or find it.

This is frustrating, but I've tried several scenarios, including the one you describe above. (Also playing draw-5 as the last move of my turn.) The failure fails to fail. Grr.

I will try to take a look at it this weekend.

It fails to detect a win, just long enough for Player X to get another 5 cards, at which point Player X wins. It lets my turn finish, doesn't hand me the win, and moves on to let player X take it.

It's been a while since I looked at the win code... are you saying that you have more cards than player X and he still wins? Or is it just failing to detect a win?

The conditions vary, but the recipe goes something like this.

I have 12 cards.
Player X has 8 cards.

Draw 5 rule in effect.

I play 10 cards in hand goal, thinking I've got the win during my turn.

Instead, Player X wins after my turn ends and having drawn 5 new cards themselves.

Pylon is now online!

Posted by dougo

Pylon is a 2-player abstract strategy game I designed a couple years ago. I just implemented it for Volity-- give it a try! The UI is rather minimalist, but I hope it's not too hard to figure out what to do. (But you should read the rules first.) There is a bot available, but it plays completely randomly, so it shouldn't be hard to beat-- though I have actually lost to it a couple times when I wasn't paying attention! Let me know if you run into any problems, or if you have any suggestions for sprucing up the UI.

There is a bug with Fluxx 3.1, such that you cannot win with the "5 Keepers" as a goal if it's in the 1st slot of the "Double Agenda" goal (not sure if it happens in the second slot as I've only had it happen 2x in the first slot).

Definitely repeatable. :(

Sorry, I didn't see the link to Report a bug before posting. I've tried submitted via the link, but it seems to hang when trying to send the report to volity.net.

Posted by JJMan

82 cards in play, 83rd/last card drawn is "Draw 2 and use 'em", so it discards said card and the only card available to draw is 'Draw 2 and use 'em' which the game keeps forcing me to draw and play.

This leads to the question, what is the proper way to exit out of a stuck game like this? Is there a way to start a new game without exiting/re-connecting?

Last but not least, thanks for the great work on this by the way.

Writing games in web client

Posted by mike sugar

I tried for a while using XIFF, but I found it pretty slow-moving and unwieldy. I think I spent two months just getting it to do the sort of login that modern Jabber servers require, before jmac announced he was taking a server-side Ajaxy approach instead.

That said, ActionScript 3 may have revitalized things for XIFF. I haven't checked in on them in a while. However, when I was working on this, they were still working on releasing a version of XIFF for AS2. So... yeah.

For what my experience is worth, the Flash road is a long, hard haul. But that's coming from a coder who wasn't very diligent about it and might not be all that good. Chances are decent that you can do a lot better.

Thanks Mike, Autstin and Phil for your inputs.
I'm still working on the project. I'm trying to
make a falsh based web client with that talks directly to the parlor, with some Jabber library like XIFF.
Is it possible?

Posted by Phil Bordelon

I'm the author of the Twij parlour; it's definitely feature-complete, and has had quite a few games run against it.

A friend of mine wrote the UI, and it is mostly complete. You can play entire games (and quite a few people have), but it has some problems with cross-game state and with mid-game joining. That said, I'd think it's a pretty solid base to start with.

They are both released under the GPL.

Posted by Austin Henry

Also, note that there's a mostly complete liar's dice variant called Twijfel in the project's SVN repository if you're looking for a starting point. I believe it's got a GPL license.

Getting the Twijfel parlor (game module) running as a test might be a nice introduction to the whole way that the bits of Volity hook together. Maybe the parlor even implements the game you want to write, and you can just concentrate on the web interface?

Just tossing ideas around :)

All server-side code should be able to remain the same and cater to any UI file's needs the exact same way. That's the whole idea, and the whole role of the upcoming web client is to enable this. So yeah, just write the game module as normal.

thanks for your quick answer, jmac. So I need to write the game module as well ,is it the same for web client? Does the bookkeeper work with the web client, if I want to host it on my own website? I'll keep working on it.
